The Origin And Purpose Of Sunblock
Sunblock is a cream that was invented to help protect human skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. These formulas are very effective in preventing sun damage and have helped to prevent millions of painful sunburns over the year. They differ from sunscreen, which doesn't generally provide the same level of protection, in both composition and effect.
Sunblock is more effective than sunscreen because it provides an opaque cover for skin that completely blocks both types of UV rays. Sunblock provides total protection from the sun, when used properly you will not tan through a block at all. Sunscreen stops some UV rays while still allowing sufficient sun to get through for tanning.
Sunblock was first invented in 1938. The original product was put together by a man named Franz Greiter and his company manufactures their sunblock even today. He came up with the product after developing a particularly painful sunburn. Though this was the original block, it was not the first commercially produced version of the product. It was nearlyt ten years later before sunblock actually hit the store shelves.
During WWII, a sunblock known as Red Vet Pet became the first widely produced product that claimed to prevent sunburn. The peculiar name came after Red Vet Petrolatum, the core ingredient in the formula. In the 1950s a company known today as Coppertone bought the product, renamed it, and broadened its appeal with mass marketing.
The original version of sun protection was sticky and very similar to red-toned petroleum jelly. The protection offered by this type of sunscreen was poor and the product was not too effective. Since the real effects of UV rays were not widely known during this point in history sun blocks and screens were not very popular at first.
The versions of sun protection we use today are far more effective than their predecessors. It is recommended by pediatricians that small children regularly use products with at least an SPF rating of 50 throughout sun exposure. Still improving on his formula in the 1960s, Mr. Greiter developed the SPF rating system to measure a formula's effectiveness. The initial versions of sun protection were rated with an SPF of about 2.
Sun blocking products today are much more popular and much better. Though there are some controversies regarding blocks, they are recommended by the American Cancer Society to protect skin from deadly cancers caused by the sun. As the ozone layer continues to deplete it will be more important that we all protect ourselves from the sun daily. Fortunately modern products are nothing like the red petroleum products of the past and they get better each year.
