Extensive Screening For Perspective Egg Donors

Surrogates and egg donors provide an invaluable service to couples who want to become parents but are infertile. Donors and surrogates are chosen by couples who want to become parents with the assistance of clinics and other organizations. Becoming an egg donor requires that a woman undergo a long screening process that ensures that she is in good health mentally and physically. For perspective parents and generous donors, the screening process is worth the time and effort.

Before a woman applies to become an egg donor for an infertile couple, she has to meet some basic requirements. The time to donate is from age 20 to 30 when the body is most fertile. Age requirements can be varied from one fertility clinic to another, so you should find out the specific age requirements from the clinic you are thinking about donating at. Other general requirements are that donors be at a healthy weight and be non-smokers.

Potential donors are often asked to send in a baby photo of themselves along with a recent photo. These will help perspective parents select the donor that they feel is best for them. Egg donation must be cared for appropriately from a legal standpoint so donors can expect to sign several different consent forms. Once this process is finished, a woman can be put on the fertility clinic's list of perspective donors.

Once a couple has selected a donor from the clinic's list, that woman will have to undergo medical testing to investigate her health. This includes psychological testing, interviews where questions are asked about personal and family medical history, and medical examinations for sexually transmitted diseases and other common illnesses. These tests are financed by the fertility clinic in most donations. If all of the results come back fine, the donation process can continue.

Eggs are usually donated about three months after the medical screening process has been completed. Egg donors need to take a variety of medications that are made to boost their fertility and permit more than one egg to be released during their normal cycle. Releasing additional eggs means that doctors will be more likely to collect healthy eggs from the donor which can be stored and then fertilized. Donor privacy is very important to just about all fertilization clinics and couples almost never meet the women whose eggs they are given. A large number of clinics also offer a reasonable financial compensation to egg donors for their time, inconvenience, and personal expenses incurred.
