Do The Public Ever Check A Cabbie's Insurance?

When you don't have a car available, taking a cab can be one of the quickest ways to get to the places you need to be. It has been a popular mode of transportation since its conception, and will continue to be popular far into the future. It has become so relied upon that taxi drivers have been taken for granted, and safety precautions have all but been completely ignored. People enter a taxi and expect to be taken wherever they want to go, for a fee of course, assuming that the taxi is a safe vehicle. This is, in fact, true for most taxi trips, but there are always those that don't follow the rules and regulations as they should.

One thing that is often overlooked by passengers is the taxi insurance. It is assumed that the vehicle is insured when you get into it, but occasionally this is not the case. Taxi insurance can cost a lot of money for a driver, and even though it is illegal, some drivers might take the risk of getting caught. The other unfortunate truth is that an uninsured taxi could be operated by an illegal taxi driver as well, who is also unlicensed and potentially dangerous.

This presents a great risk to the public, both passengers and other vehicles. The passenger can easily be put in an uncomfortable, even dangerous position as they have left control up to the driver. There have been cases reported of people being abused after getting into an illegal taxi unknowingly. In addition, a situation could occur where the driver gets caught without taxi insurance, getting them arrested on the spot. This could mean you need to find another taxi, which may be difficult depending on where you are.

Other people outside the taxi are at risk as well. In the case of an accident, the taxi driver's insurance company would traditionally pay for any damages that were caused, but if there is no insurance, the driver could cause a lot of damage to other vehicles with the owners of those vehicles taking the fall. In the UK there are routes people can take to make claims for uninsured drivers.

The risks are very apparent, yet hundreds of successful prosecutions are made every year in the UK alone of drivers posing as taxi operators or private hire drivers making roadside pick ups without having the correct type of taxi license. That is why it is imperative for anyone that is using a taxi to ask to see proof of insurance. It is better to realise a cabbie has no taxi insurance before getting into a vehicle than to discover along the way in an unfortunate manner. Taxi and mini cab drivers in the UK have to wear their local authority license at all times, they can be prosecuted for failing to do so. Those who do not have this legal form of identification are not likely to have insurance as it is impossible for taxi drivers to obtain insurance without one!
