Boating On Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is located entirely within US borders. It takes up nearly 1200 cubic miles of surface area, and while the average depth is just under 300 feet, in other places the water is 925 feet. That’s a lot of water. In fact, Lake Michigan is the fifth largest lake in the entire world!

Just the thought of the size of that playground is enough to make most of start planning a vacation. However, this isn’t the size of lake just anyone should jump into. Be sure to review boating regulations (such as the sound device requirements—is that whistle enough or do you need to invest in a horn?) and keep an eye on the weather (winds and temperature) of Lake Michigan.

Once you get the formalities squared away, there are many great reasons to visit Lake Michigan. In addition to all the beautiful water, there are many resorts that offer skiing, golf, and other land recreations.

In addition to resorts, while you’re visiting Lake Michigan, you can also choose from cabins, cottages, campgrounds, and even historic inns to lodge in. There are many outlying beach towns surrounding the lake that also offer jet skiing and fishing.

Whether you like fishing off a boat, wading in water, or off a dock, Lake Michigan offers some of the best experiences for fishing walleye, bass, trout, steelhead, perch, and salmon in all the Midwest (possibly even the world, according to some). Often dubbed the “Third Coast” of the US, we’re talking 1,660 miles of shoreline! That kind of size naturally lends itself to a wide variety of fishing experiences.
Yet, we’re just talking about the opportunities on the land. With all that water, there’s nothing like taking a boat out and cruising around. How often do you get a chance to be inland, do a 360 and see no land? You can take all sizes of boats out to experience the grandeur of the lake, depending on how far out you want to go and what the weather is like.

The water is gorgeous, with the clarity being far higher than your standard state lake. The beaches are literally swimming with happy people, all there to take in the illustrious lake. Lake Michigan truly offers an unforgettable experience to anyone who chooses to go see her.
