Are Van Drivers Really The Safest Drivers On UK Roads?

It used to be that van drivers were seen as the most dangerous drivers on UK roads. The 'white van man' stereotype was introduced and has since dominated the feelings of many drivers today, one that brought with it many negative views of anyone driving a van which happens to be white.

However, we are now hearing about research being carried out which indicates that van drivers are being much safer on the roads than many people may have thought.

According to a recent study, claims on van insurance policies are fewer than any other type of motor cover. The study also showed that on top of this, 20% of van drivers have higher vehicle qualifications, keeping them safer on the road. A level that is much higher than the percentage of car drivers who also have had extra training. The third thing that has been found is that van drivers are also seven times less likely to be involved in a motor accident than other drivers.

But are they really the safest drivers currently cruising roads in the UK? Well, some insurance companies say yes, while many people are finally dropping the stereotype of van drivers being the roads' worst. Van drivers are now experiencing premiums that are lower than other drivers based on this research, with insurance companies offering very competitive deals for van drivers irrespective of what colour their van is!

However, while van drivers are only a fraction as likely to be involved in an road traffic accident, they are in no way invincible. Any driver can have an accident, whether they drive a van, car, or bus. There are always things drivers can do to keep themselves safer on the road, regardless of the vehicle they drive.

Things such as staying awake and alert, being prepared for any breakdowns, keeping your vehicle well-maintained and avoiding any alcohol consumption before driving are the most recommended actions to take as the more time spent behind the wheel, the greater the chance is that you will be involved in an accident, so taking the right precautions will help to lower this risk.

Letting people know that they are safe on the roads is one of the reasons van drivers are able to achieve a lower van insurance rate. But this can be achieved by anyone and everyone and should be done, not only to lower your own insurance rate, but to make sure that the roads are much safer for anyone that drives on them.

So, whilst the van drivers are considered the safest at the present moment, it won't necessarily stay that way as trends, further studies and researches are constantly being carried out and altering. This is a good thing, assuming that the trend will continue towards all drivers being as safe as they can whilst driving. It is worth remembering that trends always start with one! Make it you and you could also be offered lower insurance for your vehicle, whether it is a white van or not!
