Painting is the finest form of arts and a beautiful skill possessed by painters as a blessing by gods. One of the genres of painting which has acclaimed a lot of appreciation and fame in the history of mankind is Portrait painting. As we are aware of the fact that most of the countries are a transformed form of kingdom where creating self portraits and portraits of royal people was a very fascinating and interesting profession.

As the time advanced, the advancements in science and technology also led to a change in methodologies of painting and especially portrait painting. One of the best examples I can think of to support my above statement is the famous and the best display of painting skills is “the Mona Lisa”, developed by Leonardo Da Vinci in the early 1500’s. This classy display of art remained a mystery to be solved by scientists for centuries and till date debates are going on finding out the specialty of this elegant art.

The techniques of painting have been changing ever since its birth took place. Earlier, artists used to use charcoal, pencils, dark materials for the finishing of their work pieces. It was a breakthrough and the most unique talent ever possessed by an artist till date by Leonardo Da Vinci who adopted an entirely different way technique of painting. He use to directly put paints on the canvas and form layers without actually mixing the colors before like other artists do.

Portrait painting involves drawing figure of objects, animals, human beings in order to display the personality of a human or describe the moment at which the painting has been made. More and more mediums were adopted by artists to put their portraits upon. Medias also included a wide variety like oil, watercolors, ink and pen, charcoal and a huge palette of colors.

A famous method of forming paintings was with the help of oils. Though, the art of oil portrait painting involves patience to deal with its complexity, finishing skills and toning of the portrait and selection of color palettes. The best way to form an oil portrait painting is to go by layers. Artists simplify the art of this painting by first mildly forming the main outlines and finishing the dark areas first. Once you are done with painting the dark areas, toning and shading follows it, mostly done with light colors.

This genre of painting includes a very interesting sub division which includes self portraits. In this type, artists form their own portraits on canvas. A basic necessity of self portraits involves more imagination than normal portrait paintings. Self portraits require an artist to imagine him or herself with extreme accuracy while forming the portrait. Moreover, it takes a lot of time to form your own portrait as drawing our thoughts is not as easy as drawing a visible object. Over the years, painting has evolved as a successful profession for those who have creative skills.
