A Guide To Forklift Training - What To Look For?

A good forklift training course is very important if you're looking to work with forklift trucks, whether on a construction site or in a warehousing environment. A good training course will give you the skills necessary to operate a truck with competence and safety and will help you to avoid the most common accidents associated with forklift trucks. These include :

1. People being hit by a forklift truck while it is in motion. This happens most often when the truck is reversing and can be either the drivers or the pedestrians fault, but is usually down to someone not paying attention

2. Using a Forklift on an unsafe or uneven surface which can cause the truck to topple or fall.

3. Items falling from the truck after being incorrectly loaded or picked up.

4. Overloading the truck or trying to pickup too much weight can cause the vehicle to tip or overturn.

All of These situations can be avoided with the proper tuition.

In the UK, there are regulations which cover the training of forklift operators. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (or PUWER) state that operators must have adequate training in the use and operation of forklift trucks. This usually consists of both classroom and on-truck training. The classroom part will usually be a theory lesson, including forklift truck stability, and a safety Video, followed by a theory test.
Practical training will take place over 2 - 3 days and will teach you about the safe operation of the forklift truck.

A good forklift training course should cover :
Fork Lifts and the Law
Operator's Safety Code
Basic & Advanced Steering, Stacking, De-stacking,
Picking Up & Setting Down
Theory Test
Major Component Identification, Pre-use Inspection & Reporting
Practical Skills Test.

A full training course can take up to 5 days, depending on how much tuition you need and once you've passed you will have to take a refresher course every 3 years (which will usually only take a day). If you train and pass your test on a counterbalance truck, you'll need to take a conversion course to drive a reach truck, and vice-versa.

Once you have succesfully taken a forklift training course, you will receive a forklift licence, which will greatly enhance your job prospects.
