A Small Town Called China in Canada

A small town about 20 km in the southwest of Montreal, Canada is called LACHINE, which can be translated into the same meaning of China. About 400 years ago, no Chinese people had gone to this small town and there was no trade between China and local government. But how this name appeared? The reason may be that at the time, most local people in the town dreamed of coming to China to enjoty that flourishing country. Ok, you can conclude this reason as a complete China Dream in people's heart.

In 1689, with the support from new France government, now is the Quebec, the French fur merchants lived in Montreal wanted to expand its trade routes, a route directly from the old port in Montreal to the southwest of Montreal, which is the original idea of CANALLACHINE, you can understand as China Canal. In the design, the full-length of the canal was 14.5 kilometers approximately.

Qing dynasty is the ruler of China in 17th century. What's more, 1689 was coincided with the 28th years of KangXi Emperor, a sapiential emperor in China history. At that time, China is the powerful country with number one economic power in the world and considered as the paradise in most Westerners' eyes. In order to become famous, just like many places nowdays are called the Manhattan, they wanted to name this new built canal as CANAL LACHINE, with the meaning of China Canal. Gradually, this town was changed its name to LACHINE, also with the meaning of China. Although the new French government did not finish this canal finally, the name was retained.

July 17, 1821, about 100 years later, JohnRedpath, a British engineer, began to re-build the China canal, only three yeays later, the canal was finished. In 1825, cargoes could be passed through this canal. In the 1960s, the canal and the slipways along the canal had been protected as a historical site by the Canada government. Therefore you can't see the freighters shipping in the canal now.

By the way, if you have opportunity to travel in this town, you can see a stone house near the canal, which is a fur trade exhibition center nowadays. In 1803, Alexander Gordon, a fur merchant, built the stone warehouse to store the fur products.
