Exercise Caution About Cheap Motor Trade Insurance

How much is your business worth to you, and how much are you willing to risk it? Yes, you want to find affordable insurance protection for your business; but, no, you do not want cheap motor trade insurance. The old adage about "penny wise and pound foolish" definitely applies to finding proper insurance for your automotive enterprise.

"Cheap" is not a synonym for "inexpensive," "affordable," or "a good value." "Cheap" implies not just low price but also low quality and even lower reliability. Would you buy "cheap" tools? Don't they break the minute you put pressure on them? Would you sell "cheap" cars? Don't they fall apart the minute they roll off the lot? Would you characterise your work as "cheap"? Do you want your customers to think of you as "the cheap guy"?

When you apply the word to your insurance coverage, then, "cheap" implies you pay very little for your policy, and you can expect even less-less service, less attention to your claims, and less pay-out for your losses. Naturally, you want to control all the costs associated with running your business, and with overhead and labour costs rising, you naturally want to cut-back where you can. You do not, however, want to reduce your insurance premiums by putting yourself, your business, your inventory, and your employees at-risk.

"Cheap" generally does not protect against "What if?"

No matter which niche of the motor trade you fill, you must carry liability insurance, protecting people and vehicles against your own recklessness or negligence. Your regular automobile insurance will not cover you against damages and disputes arising from your work in the trade. Your basic liability insurance typically will not protect you against others' recklessness. With "cheap" motor trade insurance, you start paying extra when you ask for coverage against other people hitting or stealing from you.

As you consider whether or not to settle for cheap motor trade insurance, develop some proficiency with the delicate science of "What if?" What if a bad guy steals all the stereo systems from the cars on your lot? Does your cheap insurance cover the stereos; does it cover the broken windows, scratched doors, and damaged upholstery? Does your cheap insurance also cover the personal items the bad guy picked-up as he took the radios?

What if a newly licensed teen-aged driver hits a fire hydrant and three pedestrians while he test drives one of your cars? Will your cheap motor trade insurance take care of all the property damage and medical expenses? What if your cheap coverage discriminates between your driving the car and your sitting in the passenger seat? What if that teen-aged test driver's auto insurance is just as cheap as yours? What if a major snowstorm collapses the roof of your garage or a major hailstorm hammers all the cars on your lot? How will your cheap motor trade insurance compensate you for your losses?

Of course, the possibilities unfold almost endlessly, and no motor trade insurance policy ever could cover all the situations your imagination can conjure. Still, when you sit down with a reputable, reliable motor trade insurance agent, he can help you tailor-make a policy to fit all your needs at premiums you can afford. Do not settle for cheap motor trade insurance when proper coverage costs only a little more.
