Holiday Insurance - Not A Problem

The far north of Scotland or the Isles of Scilly, wherever you're thinking of going for your next holiday, there are likely to be more visitors than usual this year. Holidays at home are now in vogue, as a result of the credit crunch catastrophe. Just because you're just loading the car with buckets and spades, walking boots or folding cycles, it can still be a costly operation of something goes wrong at the last minute and insurance has been cut along with the spending of the Euro.

The cost of some UK holidays can be quite high and the fact that if a family member or travelling companion can't make it due to illness can make the cost as high as ever. The possibility of theft or an accident happening during the time you're away is probably just as likely in Capri or Cornwall.

Narrowboat hire figures are up for this year, which hire companies are delighted about, but the cost of hiring them is quite an item and a lot of money to lose if you have to cancel for any reason. Holiday homes too can be as much as 1000 pounds a week for a decent sized one in an appealing area.

Taking the risks into account, it is surely worth thinking about travel insurance as soon as you're ready to book. With the NHS on top for emergency cover, you may well be able to find a policy where healthcare is not included, so there may be some saving there. One of the large insurance companies is currently offering a policy that will over if you are forced to cancel your holiday for just 20 pounds. It provides 1,000 pounds worth of protection for a week's holiday - actually 8 days. As a comparison Direct Line will cover a 25-year-old adult holidaying in the UK for 15.92 pounds for a week.

Cancellation, personal possessions and personal liability would be covered throughout the UK. Certain medical expenses in the case of emergencies would be covered too, including transport to a hospital nearer to where you live. It's not a lot of fun travelling hundreds of miles to visit some-one incapacitated in hospital back where you holidayed - especially if you have a family to care for too. Unfortunate and unforeseen situations can occur anywhere, they're not limited to foreign destinations.

Some holiday arrangements have insurance built in. One of the main providers of country cottages will refund any payments in full in the event of a medical emergency in the immediate family which forces you to cancel your holiday. This includes grandparent's illnesses - quite a common reason for cancellation. This is valuable cover, but basic and the company will offer extra personal insurance for things like loss of personal effects. It's worth checking whether or not your already have this on your household policies.

Some companies offer optional cancellation insurance. It's very easy to tick the box and add as much as 50 pounds in insurance to your costs for a holiday of up to 1200 pounds which is much more expensive than you need to pay.
Before you decide to take out travel insurance, remember that your baggage and personal belongings may well be covered somewhere else. Lots of household policies will cover you for personal effects, even outside the home, so it's well worth checking with your insurer.

It's probably worth thinking about an annual policy of you think you'll be taking some short breaks. You might find a cheap flight and grab some sunshine later in the year and if you have annual cover it's all taken care of. Whatever you choose, it's important to check like for like in the way of cover. An independent broker will do this for you and come up with the best deals, so you can get on with planning your break and leave the cover to them.
