Lady Driver Insurance Premiums All Set To Increase
It has come as a surprise but maybe it was long overdue. Men driver insurance premium was high due to the fact that studies and records indicated male drivers are likely to be more prone to getting involved in fatal mishaps as well as violations of traffic rules.
Lady driver insurance premium for young women has always been much lower and this news that this can go up by almost 50% than what was being charged by insurance service providers has really come as disturbing news for women. This increase coming in the wake of an economy just about beginning to show some traction and revival is going to hit car owners hard, struggling as they are with already high energy costs.
The decision appears all the more perplexing when logic dictates that those at a higher risk of getting involved in mishaps pose a greater threat to the insurance companies by way of compensation claims and should therefore pay higher premiums. In fact, the companies have gone by a lot of empirical data and demographics to conclude that young women drivers are generally safer and that is how special premium rates were worked out for women, which was much lower than what was being charged for men.
The huge gap in pricing appears to be the main reason for this corrective action since it is being felt that while records and past data do show a propensity for young men to get into higher number of mishaps, they should not be victimised to an extent where the driver insurance premium difference is almost 100%
The European Court believes that this becomes a case of gender discrimination and wants to have a level playing field for both young men and women. The decision will have its ramifications on other costs like that of life assurance, medical cover for health, pension annuities. This sudden increase in lady driver insurance has not been accepted well by particularly those lady drivers who have just recently cleared their driving tests.
Men however have been really piqued that the gap or difference in the premium for a man and a woman driver is quite wide. The reason for this becomes more justifiable when you consider that if a man and the woman in the age group 22-25 took three attempts to clear the test within hardly a couple of weeks of each other, the man still paid double the lady driver insurance premium when he knows and it has been proved that there is not much difference in the driving abilities of the two individuals.
The British Insurers Association however believes that the pricing is a fair one and reflects the ground realities. They continue to hold the view that since young men are more prone to accidents, they must be prepared to fork out more by way of insurance premium and that is unlikely to be revised downwards though there has been some talk about a possible 10% drop in men's premium.
It however seems certain that lady driver insurance is surely set to go up in order to bridge the wide gap and that is not good news for young women.
