The Benefits Of Using An IBM Blade Server

Computers have evolved a great deal in the last forty years. As organisations and companies grow bigger, they require more calculations and more work to be done. Networking of computers within an organisation is very useful and helps to share data in a very short period of time. However, a lot of heat will be generated if a number of computers are operated at the same time. To avoid this problem, blade servers are used. A blade server is a kind of a chassis for the server and can house server blades, which are modular electronic circuit boards.

In a blade server, only the vital components are retained. These are the components that carry out the computing tasks, like the processor and primary memory. The other components are moved to the blade enclosure so that the heat generated within the workstation becomes less. Separate fans are provided in the blade enclosures for cooling purposes. One of the most popular blade servers is the IBM Blade Server. It was introduced in 2002 to wide appreciation and acclaim. The initial version had fourteen blade slots and facilitated high speed networking through Gigabit Ethernet switches.

IBM collaborated with Intel to provide blade servers for Intel's high speed x86 server processor. This model was called Blade Center (E). Cluster computing has gained popularity over the years and this is due partly to the blade server technology perfected by IBM.

A blade is a single entity that contains components like RAM, basic input devices, processor, and small secondary storage media. Many blades could share the resources of a single blade chassis. The International Data Corporation (IDC) has identified IBM as one of the major blade server companies. The first generation of IBM blade servers were Xeon based and consumed quite a lot of energy. But the current generation blade servers from IBM are extremely energy efficient and are even considered to be in the green zone.

IBM offers different types of blade servers for customers to choose from. The Blade Center models are offered in various versions like E, H, T, HT, and Blade Center S. Under the x86 processor category, the HS models were offered (HS 12, 20, 22 and so on).

Apart from these, IBM also offers blade servers based on its own technology, like Cell processors and Power Architecture models. The fact that the world's first petaflop system, Roadrunner is based on IBM blade servers deserves special mention.

Another advantage in an IBM blade server is the hot swapping facility. Without chassis power interruption, units can be added or replaced from the chassis. A typical blade server will have digital indicators which show system information and warnings.

The advent of optical fibres has made networking faster and easier. Older cables have been replaced by these fibres. Ten Gigabit Ethernet switches have also been introduced to increase the rate of data transfer. You should analyse your needs and select a suitable IBM blade server for your organisation.
