5 Easy Ways to Save Money in the Kitchen

If you're finding your budget is stretched to the limit these days, you need look no farther than your kitchen for some easy ways to save some money. There are many ways to cut costs when it comes to buying and preparing food, but many people are unaware of, or don't utilize them. This article lists 5 easy ways to save money in the kitchen.

1. Buy less expensive brands. It may sound obvious, but many of us spend way too much on national brands, when a store brand or generic product will do just as well. Experiment with alternative cheaper brands of products you normally use, and if the taste and/or quality is comparable to the name brands you normally buy, then switching brands can save you some money.

2. Eat less meat. It is said by many health authorities that people in the western world eat much more meat than is needed for a healthy diet. Eating large quantities of meat can be unhealthy and also costly, as meat is a rather expensive food item pound for pound. Four to six ounces of meat per day provides sufficient protein for most people. You may want to try cooking with less meat than you normally do and see how it tastes. Or you may want to substitute vegetables or spices in place of the meat. Eating less meat may make you healthier and a bit wealthier.

3. Cook Your Meals from Scratch. Buying pre-packaged or pre-prepared food at the store can be costly, and is generally much more expensive than cooking your own food at home from fresh ingredients.

4. Cook a Double Batch. Think "Cook Once-Eat Twice." Try to get in the habit of cooking more than you need for one meal. Cook double quantities and save half for later (in the fridge of course). For instance, cook enough spaghetti for two meals – one for tonight, one for later in the week. This will not only save money on utilities by using the stove less, but it will also save you time by cooking half as often.

5. Cook Big Batches. Like cooking a double batch, you can cook some things in large batches for multiple meals. Soup is a good example of foods to cook in big batches. In a large stock pot or slow crockery cooker you can make a large quantity of soup that can be divided up into smaller portions and frozen for later use. When you're ready to eat it, just take out of the freezer, thaw, heat, and eat. It's a perfect and easy meal to warm you on a cold winter day.
