10 Household Chores You Can Train Your Young Child to Do

A good way to start teaching your child responsibility is to assign some easy chores that he or she can do. In addition to learning responsibility, your child will gain self-confidence as he/she learns how to do simple tasks, and he/she will feel like they're an important part of the family. Children love to help out, so give them the opportunity to do so.

Here is a list of 10 household chores that you can train your young child to do.

1. Dust and Sweep. Have your child dust furniture and sweep the floors along with you. You can model how it should be done and work side-by-side to guide your youngster in his first attempts.

2. Make the bed. Show your child how to make her own bed every day. It may not be as neat as you make it, even a little sloppy at first, but your child will improve over time with practice.

3. Put away and hang clothes. Teach your child how to put clothes in a proper dresser drawer, and how to hang clothes back in the closet. You may need to provide a small stool that the child can step on to hang the clothes.

4. Put toys back in the toy box. Train your child how to put all of his toys back into the toy box, closet, or other toy storage area at the end of each day. In addition to teaching responsibility and neatness, training your child to put away the toys ensures that toys are not left out where they can be stepped on or tripped over, causing possible personal injury and/or damage to the toy.

5. Feed the pets. If your child has a dog, cat, hamster, goldfish, or other pet you can teach your child how to feed and be responsible for feeding the pet.

6. Set the table. A child can learn how to set down placemats, dishes, forks, spoons, and napkins for each family member.

7. Clear the table. After each meal, your child can help clear items from the table one thing at a time.

8. Empty the dishwasher. Show your child how to carefully remove non-breakable items from the dishwasher and place them in cabinets and drawers where they belong.

9. Empty the garbage. You can show your child how to remove and tie up the trash bags from your indoor trash container, take them out and put them in the garbage cans, and replace with a clean trash bag liner.

10. Water houseplants. Buy a small water pot that you can use to train your child how to water the houseplants.
