Important Information You Need to Know About Minibus Insurance

A mandatory rule in the UK is that every vehicle owner must enrol their vehicles for insurance in order to get protection and security in the event of unwanted accidents that may cause damages that could affect people and properties. One such type of vehicle insurance is the minibus insurance.

A vehicle is considered a minibus if it has seven to seventeen seats. Many insurers have various insurance policies for minibuses, regardless of whether they are used as private vehicles or for commercial purposes. In the UK where most minibuses are used as taxis, this kind of vehicle has to have an additional coverage for its passengers and must specifically use the "private hire" option on the insurance policy documents. The taxi licensing officials will need these documents as a requirement for issuing a taxi licence plate.

Minibuses that are not used as passenger taxis have special insurances, but these minibuses have to be specifically used as a means of commercial transportation such as that of transporting students to school or sending patients to the hospital.

Most of the UK institutions let their minibuses run on a permit under the issuance of the local Traffic Commissioner. This permit is intended for non-profitable organisations such as hospitals and schools, to offer transportation either for hire or reward without having to go through a license on Public Service Operator. These minibuses must only transport a specified group of individuals, particularly the members of such non-profit organisation. The vehicle driver may operate the minibus as a registered bus service for public use by non-profit groups with the permit of authorities in the transportation agency.

Policy Coverage

What is covered under this type of insurance? Third party insurance coverage is the minimum requirement for minibus insurance. It includes coverage for property damage and the vehicle owner. The minibus driver is also not responsible for paying any incurred damage. Moreover, it includes coverage against fire and theft. If you happen to own a minibus or if your organisation has one, do not just settle for the minimum insurance policy requirement. Comprehensive coverage is still strongly advisable. Not only will it insure the vehicle against fire and theft, it also fully covers the cost of accidental damages. No one can guarantee safety on the road so better have the minibus insured for protection and security during unexpected situations.

Minibus Insurance Categories

As mentioned earlier, there is a wide range of minibus insurance coverage depending on the usage of the vehicle. Below are the most common minibus insurance policy categories by various non-profit groups:

Business groups

Examples of these are nursing homes, restaurants, and pubs.

Private owners

Individual vehicle owners and families that use minibus for social purposes and pleasure

Private schools and nurseries

Transporting students and nursery pupils to schools for hire and reward

Charity groups, churches, and community groups

Private hire, clubs, and organisations

Minibus fleets

All these categories of minibus insurance vary in their rates so check with the insurance company for insurance quotes.
