A Guide To Courier Insurance

Courier insurance coverage is unlike most vehicle insurance. Since this is a specialized type of coverage for vehicles that are involved in the courier business, there are many kinds of coverage available that are not offered with regular vehicle insurances.

Whether you are an individual courier or an owner of a big courier business, it is important that you get insurance for your vans or vehicles. It is also equally important that you get the right kind of courier insurance coverage.

Any kind of vehicle can be insured under a courier insurance policy as long as that vehicle is used for courier service. If you have more than one vehicle to cover, it is a good idea to ask for information about fleet insurance. This will allow you to insure all the vehicles you are using in your courier business under one policy.

A basic coverage is the Hire and Reward or Haulage cover. This covers you for carrying other people's goods but does not cover your personal belongings. Goods in Transit liability covers loss, damage, or theft of the goods within the vehicle, whether it is your personal belongings or those of others that you are delivering. Ask around if the GIT includes door-to-door coverage, as some GIT will only cover the goods while they are inside the vehicle and excludes them once you carry the goods outside to take for actual delivery. This includes getting the goods out on a trolley, up the stairs, and across the street.

Public liability is usually bundled along with GIT. This covers you for damage and/or injury to other people or properties while doing your courier service. Third party, fire, theft, and comprehensive cover are types of coverage that you will find in regular insurances that can also be included in a courier insurance policy. Policies can be put in the name of the driver or courier, the business owner, or even the company name.

Read the policy carefully and check for exclusions. Most common exclusions are for hazardous goods or livestock, driving at airports, leaving your vehicles unlocked, and carrying "theft-attractive" goods like laptops, digital cameras and cell phones.

If you are an individual courier, you can consider getting light hauler insurance. But this kind of policy restricts the load limits you can carry and might limit coverage to "pre-booked" consignments. Still, it is a good idea to consider one, since it is cheaper.

Take note that most insurance companies offer introductory discounts and other promos. Shop around and get free quotes online to get the best deals. Also, most UK courier insurance will only cover you within the UK. If you travel outside the UK, you need to get additional cover.

Read the wording of the policy carefully before you sign anything. Make sure you are getting the exact cover you need. Do not decide based on price alone. Ask others about the insurance company's reputation and what the service is like when you make a claim.
