A Weekend in Coronado: 5 Things You Cannot Miss
Exploring San Diego? No trip to San Diego is complete without a few days on San Diego’s famous Coronado Island. Coronado offers the feel-good small town vibe while being just a bridge away from downtown. In this area, San Diego boutique hotels are gaining in popularity because of their ability to offer a more personal experience while still having the accommodations of a larger hotel. Do not be fooled by the picket fences and well manicured lawns of Coronado; visitors will be happy to know that this same friendly experience can be found at the Coronado Island hotels. Below is a list of five tings that cannot be missed while exploring Coronado.
1. Stroll on Orange Avenue: Orange Avenue is Coronado’s main street. Bustling with clothing boutiques, antique shops and a variety of cafés and restaurants, Orange Avenue is a great place to get ice cream, do some window shopping and a little people watching.
Duck into the Museum of History and Art to learn more about local history including Coronado’s Naval history and famous architecture. During the summer season there are even free concerts in Spreckels Park. This community park does a great job of adding to the outdoorsy feeling of Orange Avenue.
2. Rent a Bike: Driving in Coronado can be difficult in the middle of summer. Though most of Coronado is catered to pedestrians, a bike allows visitors to explore more secluded regions of the island. Serious cyclist skills are not required; there are several paved, flat bike paths to choose from. There are even bike tours of Coronado.
3. Beach: Coronado beaches are known for their soft sand and facilities. Most beaches in Coronado have playgrounds, restrooms, lifeguards, fire rings and picnic areas. The beaches are great for surfing, sailing, sunbathing and sand castle making. (Surf lessons are available.)
4. Downtown Ferry: Want a night on the town? Do it in style by taking the ferry from Coronado Island to the Gaslamp in Downtown San Diego. The ferry connection offers great views of San Diego’s skyline and access to the nightlife of downtown while being able to sleep in a quiet Coronado hotel near the beach.
5. Ferry Landing Marketplace: Art galleries, delicious restaurants and a variety of shops characterize this fun park. There is a farmers market here on Tuesdays which is a great place to see local artists and find delicious, locally grown produce. Dining at one of these restaurants at sunset offers amazing bridge and downtown views.
Coronado has always been a local’s favorite for respite and retreat; it will surely become yours as well.
