Making Your Garden Happy and Healthy with Companion Planting

When it comes to selecting plants for your garden, the choices may seem overwhelming. Even if you manage to choose a few favorites, there are still lots of other factors to consider when growing certain plants. Some of the greatest annoyances for gardeners are pests and disease. However, with proper planting strategies, you can utilize companion planting techniques to help control pests and diseases naturally. Find out more about companion planting below.

Bug Repellent

If dogs are considered “man’s best friend,” should French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) be considered the gardener’s best friend? Marigolds are some of the most valued of companion plants since they have a great capacity for pest repulsion. Their strong scent is known to repel garden pests like whiteflies and beetles, and they also produce chemical compounds in the soil that are known to repel nematodes, as well. It’s a general gardening rule of thumb to plant these fragrant flowers everywhere, as the stronger the scent, the better its repelling abilities are.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is also a good repellent that works well in vegetable and flower gardens to repel flies, aphids, mosquitoes, and those pesky hornworms that like to feast on your tomatoes and peppers. Additionally, basil acts as a fungicide and growth stimulator for many plants, making it a good companion to vegetable gardens where the use of fungicidal and fertilizers may not be suitable. Petunias (Petunia spp.) are a great way to repel tomato worms, aphids and Mexican bean beetles as well. If you’re looking to save some money, don’t forget to check out your local wholesale nursery for these plants.

Trap Plants

Another way to control the pests in your garden is to plant trap plants. Trap plants work as a decoy of sorts. By attracting pests to a trap plant, your other plants are saved from the damaging effects of the pests’ appetite. Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum spp.) act to trap aphids, cabbage worms, whiteflies and cucumber beetles, as well as attracting predatory insects that will feed off the pests you don’t like. Geraniums (Geranium spp.) attract Japanese Beetles and Leafhoppers that are a bane to roses, tomatoes and peppers. Asters (Aster spp.) and Zinnias (Zinnia spp.) will also act as a trap plant for Japanese Beetles.

Pollinator Attractor

Another purpose of a companion plant is to attract pollinators, like Butterflies and Hummingbirds, to help with the pollination, and thus reproduction, of your garden’s plants. Some plants will also attract predators to the pests you are trying to eradicate, like Asters and Zinnias. These attract hummingbirds to not only help with pollination, but also to feed off of whiteflies and aphids. Look for these, and other great San Diego palm trees at your local San Diego, CA nursery.
