How to Deal with Your Car Overheating
An overheated engine can ruin your trip completely, not to mention the fact that it can cause severe damage to your car, which has the potential to cost you thousands of dollars in repairs. The problem with engine overheating is that there are few noticeable signs. It’s not until the problem has become severe that you will see your temperature gauge rising and steam starting to come out of your car’s hood. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to avoid overheating and to remedy the problem (at least temporarily) if it happens to you while on the road.
Make Checking Your Antifreeze a Habit
The most common cause for overheating is your car’s antifreeze not circulating properly. If there is a leak that is causing your car to lose antifreeze, the engine will quickly start to overheat. However, antifreeze loss can also happen more gradually, simply due to extended use, evaporation and time. One of the biggest things you can do to prevent overheating is to check your antifreeze levels regularly.
What to Do When it Happens
If your temperature gauge goes all the way up to “H”, the first thing to do is turn on the heat in your car. Running the heat will cause the engine to temporarily cool down, so you may find yourself blasting your heat when it is eighty degrees outside. This is obviously not a permanent solution, but it will help keep the situation under control until you find a safe spot to pull over and park.
After parking, wait 15 to 20 minutes, until your car’s engine has cooled before you open up the car’s hood. After the engine is cool, go ahead and open up the hood, remove the radiator cap with a wet rag in hand and check to see if there is enough coolant. If not, you can add coolant until the radiator is filled; you can also add water. Adding water will dilute the coolant but it should allow it to circulate through the engine and keep the temperature down, at least until you get to a mechanic.
If the antifreeze levels on your engine don’t seem to be the problem, it could be a broken or detached uptake hose. Check the hose and see if it is clogged. One way to remedy a blocked hose is to blow on the tube or wash it down with water. Again, though, this is a temporary solution. A faulty hose needs replacement in order for the problem of overheating to be fixed.
