Problems with Using a Sitebuilder to Create Your Website

In the past few years, a new option has arisen for people to create a website without the help of a web designer. There are now services that offer software that lets people build their own websites. Some of these companies even allow people to build and host their own sites free of charge. At first, glance these seem like very appealing options. However, sometimes the old saying “you get what you pay for” holds true.

Upon further investigation, it seems that these sitebuilders leave a lot to be desired if you are seeking a professional and unique website. First of all, sitebuilders rely heavily on the use of templates. This means that your website is going to look very formulaic. It will look very similar to the websites of others using sitebuilders. Anyone who has spent a good deal of time searching the web, can recognize website templates rather quickly.

Another issue with using free service from a sitebuilder is that the name of their company appears in your domain. This means that you do not own your own custom domain. All the traffic that you receive on your page actually doesn’t belong to you.

Take sitebuilders like Wix, Weebly and SnapPages, for example. Any domain that you set up is going to be customized to their company. So, for example, lets say your name was Michael Smith and you wanted your site to be www.michaelsmith.com. Instead, you would end up with www.michaelsmith.weebly.com. Obviously, the domain name with “weebly” in the title is going to look a lot less impression.

Another issue with using a sitebuilder to create your website is that these services may turn out to harm your ability to get web traffic. Some sitebuilders rely solely on Flash, which is notoriously weak for providing good search engine optimization results. If you are considered about your Google page rank (and you should be!), you will quickly find that a Flash sitebuilder leaves you with virtually no presence in the search engines.

These types of websites may be fine if you are just planning to have a website to casually to share with friends. However, if you are looking for a professional and reliable presence on the web, you should consider hiring a web designer to lend you a hand.
