Identifying Anorexia

We are living in a world where people judge others first on their appearances and second on their talents or abilities. This has lead to problems for many people, mainly teenagers that feel it is their duties to get in line with the rules imposed by fashion magazines, singers, movie stars, and so on. Anorexia, one of the main disorder affecting teenagers and young adults from all over the world, is basically a self induced disorder that acts at an emotional level and causes a complete lack of appetite. This condition is generally characterized by an extreme self consciousness in regards to weight, and a true obsession towards losing weight. Those suffering from anorexia become preoccupied with keeping a close watch on their calorie counts.

Because anorexia is basically an emotional disorder, which leads to patients having a distorted view of their physical appearance, one of the main steps that need to be taken as part of the treatment is to provide professional help, because, if left completely untreated, anorexia most often to depression and other problems which would only increase the time required for treating it. Because anorexia is so strongly related to physical appearance and weight issues, people might be inclined to believe that anorexia affects mainly people with real weight issues. The reality, however, is that most people suffering from anorexia are really just at their ideal weight mark, or even below it. In fact, this is the reason why anorexia leads to severe depression.

When the self perception of people gets drawn so far from the true situation, getting to the target becomes impossible as it is already been reached in reality. For those people that are not able to comprehend how anorexia leads to depression so easily, just take in comparison a person continuously trying to tie his shoe laces even though they have already been tied a moment after first trying. Now, of course this person will eventually become really frustrated with his situation, and his frustration will eventually lead to severe depression. People suffering from anorexia do not express their rejection towards food publicly. Instead, they become very secretive and never stop trying to address their weight issues until they receive competent advice and direction. This poses a problem to family members and friends that can recognize the existence of a problem, but cannot identify it.

The most important physical effects derived from anorexia include weak immunity, dehydration, extreme fatigue and overall weakness, sleeplessness, and in some cases even severe medical illnesses and disorders which include heart problems, low blood pressure, anemia, and numerous others. In terms of psychological effects, anorexia leads to depression - which may become severe in some cases, an increased level of irritability, emotional inconsistencies, memory problems and even isolation from the surrounding world, not to mention that this disorder can lead to issues with alcohol and even drugs. It has already been found that anorexia is one of the most dangerous disorders today, and all those that show signs of suffering from it must receive help as soon as possible.
