How Does Credit Counseling Work For You

Has the current state of the economy dragged you down? If it has, you are certainly not by yourself. Many other consumers are finding it more and more of a challenge to keep up with their financial obligations, even their house payments. Increasing debt results in a great deal of stress, which can hurt your well being, even make you sick. Because of this, it's best to create a plan when you first know you have a debt problem. Depending on your situation, this plan could include credit counseling.

You may think that you can manage these debts adequately yourself, but credit counselors are trained to teach you reduce your debt at a faster rate than you could probably accomplish on your own.

Typically, credit counseling works best when you aren't necessarily behind on all of your payments, but struggling to scrape up the money to make them on time. If you are only able to make minimum payments, this may be your best option, as well.

To utilize the service, you must agree to stop using all of your credit cards and to avoid applying for any type of additional credit. In exchange, the credit counselor will do their best to lower your overall balance, by negotiating lower interest rates, etc.

(In certain instances, they may be able to also request removal of late or over limit fees. This all will depend on the specific creditor they are dealing with. This can actually result in a huge savings, in the long run.)

Once you decide to work with a credit counseling agency they will create a detailed debt management plan, customized just for your situation. You will be required to pay an enrollment fee, to begin the program. It will also be necessary to pay the agency a monthly fee for their services.

Once your payoff plan has been put into place, you will make your payment directly to the agency who will in turn distribute the funds to your creditors. This is usually done electronically.

Because of these required fees, credit counseling is probably not for you if you are struggling to accomplish tasks such as putting food on the table and paying your utility bills.

A warning about credit counseling agencies? First, beware of any credit service that promises to improve your credit score by 100 or more points within 30-60 days. It is virtually impossible to do this legally. In addition, you can pay significant fees for these services. Some non-profit counseling agencies will help you for free. However, you should know that many of these agencies are financed by the credit card industry. That's why they can provide services for free. But they will mainly be concerned with helping you pay your credit card debt in full and on time. They will not help with secured loans such as car or house payments and will counsel you away from bankruptcy if at all possible, even if it's the best option for someone with serious credit problems.

That presents an incomplete picture of what your options really are. They also may not tell you that registration with their credit counseling agency, and beginning a repayment plan, also appears on your credit report, where lenders will see it and refuse to give you credit. This is nearly as damaging as having a bankruptcy on your credit report.
