StarCraft 2:Wings Of Liberty. Introduction.

Fans of the Starcraft series have only had to wait, what a more than a decade (and counting) with bated breath for the much anticipated sequel to the award winning game which redefined the RTS genre. But after several revised release dates, the splitting of the game into a trilogy and twelve long years later it looks as though the wait might finally be near an end.

For those of us lucky enough to get our hands on the beta, testing is already well into the advanced stages, offering a preview of all the new units, an updated battle.net 2.0 interface and of course most importantly a brand new gaming engine. By all accounts first impressions are extremely positive. There’s a raft of new gameplay modes to choose from to suite the differing preferences of gamers, these include a Practice League which features slower gameplay, Co-op vs. AI, Co-op skirmish, Custom games and Challenges so clearly there’s plenty to sink your teeth into! In addition to the Practice League there is also a tiered league system including bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond leagues which should help avoid those embarrassing mismatches which can become an annoying regular feature of other online match-making systems.

Fans of the series will be glad to hear that the three races remain untouched with the Protoss, Zerg and Terrans all returning to resume hostilities with each other. The reasoning behind the split of Starcraft II into three parts is to give each race the attention and depth of storyline it deserves by effectively giving each faction its own game. Watch this space for some more in-depth analysis of each of the races, early analysis of the gameplay dynamics and general first impressions based on beta testing and the views of other users.
