Five Ways to Make Your Car Last Longer

With the whole world seemingly in a global depression these days, many of us are trying to get more out of what we already own, rather than buying something new. One big expenditure for many people is their automobiles. Here are five ways to make your car last longer, so you don't have to worry about buying a brand new one.

1. Be sure to check your engine oil every two weeks or so. Also, make sure that you get your car lubed and the oil changed after every 3000 miles. If you do not do this, your car will eventually start to experience some problems. Keeping your car properly oiled and lubed is one of the most basic routine maintenance activities that will keep your car running well.

2. Remember to check your tire pressure, transmission fluid, and brake fluid every 1000 miles. This does not have to be a big production - just pop open your hood and take a look. Then, just pull out a pressure gauge and quickly check your tires.

3. Don't neglect the outside of your car. Especially if you have a new car, you should give it a good wash and a wax about once a month to protect the finish.

4. You need to change your transmission fluid periodically as well. Bad transmission fluid can cause severe damage or failure in your transmission, and you want to avoid that because transmission repairs are very expensive. Refer to your owner's manual for recommended change intervals. In addition, it is wise to have a mechanic check it periodically as well. This is often done during routine oil and lube maintenance.

5. Flush your radiator just about once a year. At about the same time, you can also check your air conditioning system. Ask your mechanic to do this checkup, and if there are any problems, you should get them fixed before they turn into even bigger problems.

Finally, remember to be careful while driving. Getting into an accident because of careless driving will cost you a bundle of cash, which is what you are trying to save during these times. While it may seem obvious, it is still worth remembering that that way you drive your car from day to day is one of the best ways to make your car last longer.
