Visit Suffolk--One Of England's Historic Treasures

Suffolk in East Anglia, England, is a mostly rural county with historic treasures. Important towns in the county include Ipswich, Lowesoft, Bury St. Edmunds and Felixstowe port. Suffolk is mostly wetland habitat and arable land with a few low-lying hills--a county of outstanding natural beauty. West Suffolk is known for archaeological sites from the Stone Age, the Bronze and Iron Ages. Many bronze age items may be viewed in the Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St. Edmunds, nearby sites include barrows and traces of cremations. In Sutton Hoo, on the East of the county, was found one of England’s greatest Anglo-Saxon archaeological discoveries. A ship was buried with a hull full of treasures, even a Sword of State, along with jewellery and silver bowls.

Hengrave’s visual spendour is captivating. Originally built in 1525, the Hall is a wonderful example of medieval architecture. Composed of stonework and brick, the structure was influenced more by Roman than Tudor architecture. The church tower, east of the Hall, definitely displays Saxon origins. Every corner of Hengrave tells tales from the 1500s. Queen Elizabeth I felt charmed by Hengrave. In 1896 a restoration of Hengrave took place, renovating the great Banquet Hall, the gallery, chapel, and summer parlour. An annexe at Hengrave was used in World War I as a hospital. The Hall was turned into a boarding school by Assumption nuns, but closed in 1974, when Hengrave Hall became an Ecumenical Retreat and Conference Centre.
