StarCraft 2 Terran Ground Vehicles

We've already got up close and personal with the new and improved infantry units of the Terran faction, now it's time to take a look at the real Terran muscle, the ground-based attack vehicles. Speaking of muscle the first unit we’re going to examine has that in abundance; the all new Thor. The Thor is aptly named after the Norse God of Thunder and is a huge mechanical walker, slightly reminiscent of something from Gundam Wing or Transformers. It is certainly a mighty opponent, equipped with two “Thor’s Hammer” particle accelerators, one on each arm which deals significant damage. The Thor is also armed with shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft Javelin Missiles which are highly effective against light aircraft though not quite powerful enough to overly worry cruiser-class air units. The final ace up the sleeve is the Thor’s 250mm strike cannons which can be used as a special ability to target a single unit, dealing massive damage and stunning the target for a short period. This ability does, however, cause the Thor to become immobile whilst being performed. As you’d expect, the Thor is heavily armoured and is able to soak up a fair deal of punishment. The Thor is probably best deployed alongside other slow moving ground-units as the spearhead of the assault, especially as it is somewhat vulnerable to large numbers of weaker units such as zealots and zerglings if on its own. The Thor is incredibly effective when used alongside the Medivac Dropship, increasing its mobility greatly. The Thor takes up all of the Dropship’s capacity and carrying on the Transformers similarity packs itself up into a box to be transported.

The other heavily armoured vehicle in the Terran arsenal is the good old Siege-tank veteran of the original Starcraft and Broodwar campaigns. The Siege-tank returns in its dual role as both a tank and artillery and is largely unchanged from original. The Siege-tank is extremely useful at providing mobile long-range capacity but cannot fire whilst moving so it is week against both units which fast and those that can deal melee damage. Due to this vulnerability, it is a good tactic to give the Siege-tank plenty of support, which the Thor is more than capable of doing, and combined in numbers the two make a pairing to be reckoned with.

Whilst in early development of Starcraft II, there was a new Terran unit known as the Jackal which was an assault buggy style vehicle which has since been renamed to the more fitting title of Hellion. Although less impressive than the Thor or Siege-tank, the Hellion is still very useful. The fire-breathing firebrand buggy is certain to unleash hell on any enemy infantry units. With its devastating flamethrower and fast movement speed it is able to outmanoeuvre, outrun and outgun all but the heaviest of infantry. Whilst extremely fast, the Hellion must stop whilst dealing damage which it does in ‘splash’ form, targeting one unit in particular but burning all units in a line from the original target. The most effective means of targeting is to aim for units furthest away thus dealing area of effect damage to the maximum number of enemies. Due to the Hellion’s impressive speed but less than impressive armour, it is best suited to hit and run style tactics and can also be quite effective as a scout or in a cleverly positioned ambush.
