Essential Things To Keep In Mind In Choosing The Ideal Curtain Linings

Why do you put up curtains in your windows?

Is it to finish off and add more style to the room, or is it to prevent the harsh morning light from waking you up, or is it to provide privacy, or could it be to provide insulation from cold during winter? These are just some of the reasons why people go through great lengths, figuratively and literally, to put up curtains in their homes.

There are many considerations when you decide to get new curtains and it’s not that easy as it sounds. Keep in mind that new curtains are an investment and as any other venture, you first need to conduct research and market survey to find out which best suits your needs.

So let’s move on to what you need for putting up your curtains. You have decided which design is best for your window and the room. You have chosen a color scheme. You have even decided that tracks are better than rods for your curtains. But you did spent quite a lot of time on what type of curtain fabrics you’d like as well as the print. Not that anyone can blame you, really. There are so many prints to choose from. You can even have a material pieced together from pieces and scraps of other cloths, just like patchwork fabrics.

Another feature you should consider is the opacity or light control of the curtain fabric. Again, it depends if you want to wake up with the morning sunlight streaming into the window or maybe you’d rather sleep till noon and would want to have thick curtains to keep the sun out.

Sheer fabrics are translucent which can let some light in and cheer up the room. Sheer fabrics are ideal if you want some privacy since it filters the light coming in. In daytime, most sheer fabrics lets you see people outside but those who are outside can not see you. There are also ideal in the summer months since they are woven loosely and allow for some fresh air to come through.

You can also opt for uncoated fabrics which provide some level of insulation for not-so-cold weather. They are tightly woven fabrics which are almost opaque when observed in ambient light. Still the fabric is usually not thick enough to totally absorb strong light sources but they do provide a reasonable level of heat insulation due to the tight weave of the fabric.

Meanwhile, coated fabrics are your standard uncoated fabrics with a rubber backing applied to the fabric for better light absorption. Liquefied rubber polymer is usually applied to an uncoated fabric to a maximum of three coatings for a better light absorption capacity.

Others also use linings to help with light absorption and improve insulation. They provide protection for the fiber from dirt and grime. But, more importantly, they serve as insulation against too much light; reduce street noise as well as moisture protection for the fabric over time. You can achieve insulation, by lining medium to heavy curtain fabrics to cover the entire window. Privacy can be accomplished by using a black out lining to keep out the light.

Curtain linings, once you have decided which once suits your needs, are important to achieve not only the look you want to have in the room but also the level of comfort you need. If you are still not sure what to do, you can ask a professional curtain fitter to help you out. There are so many styles, colors, designs and prints to choose from. Remember that your curtains are investments too. So take your time when deciding.
