How To Manage Back Pain Effectively

Everyone in their lifetime will suffer from some type of back pain. Back pain is so common and there are a lot of unanswered questions. We will try to uncover some of these questions.

What causes Back Pain

The exact cause of pain in most back aches is very difficult to pin point, there are many things working in your back such as, discs, nerves, ligaments, cartilage, and of course muscles, and in fact all of these items can produce pain. Everyday activities such as lifting, exercise and playing sports can cause a pull or strain and potentially cause pain. Severe pain is usually caused by small tears in the outer layer of a spinal disc as well as degeneration causing inflammation, bulging, and even become herniated. If the injury is minor, it is more than likely to repair on its own. Often the pain experienced is caused by chemical substance being released in response to the irritation and or injury. The chemical substance surrounding the nerves causes the area to become inflamed and causes swelling which is also a contributing factor.

How Long Will the Pain Last

The duration of the pain is measured by the severity of the injury and classified as either acute or chronic. In most cases, acute pain usually lasts about a month or less or until the irritated area heals. Almost 80% of all lower back episodes are resolved within six weeks. Chronic pain that last months at a time are usually not caused by tissue damage or an injury, they can be associated with spine conditions or related factors as muscle loss, body weight, and stress.

How to Relieve Back Pain

Using over the counter medication such as acetaminophen and anti-inflammatory medications has been proven to be quite effective to reduce symptoms and maintain a level of comfort. Studies have shown one in five people will use prescription medication under the care of a Doctor such as muscle relaxers and even narcotics when dealing with sever back pain, especially when trying to facilitate sleep while dealing with the symptoms. These medications should be used only when prescribed by a physician.

Advice on Dealing with the pain

One of the most effective treatments for acute back pain is to stay as active as possible and not to remain stable in bed or on a sofa for long periods of time. Activity will get the blood and nutrients flowing to the affected areas and help speed recovery. It is not recommended to perform vigorous or uncontrolled activities such as weight lifting or contact sports when pain is severe. You must always consult with your Doctor before returning to these types of activity.

Ice or Heat

Both heat and ice are effective in reducing pain, but it is important to know when to use them. Ice should only be used with in first 48hrs of the injury and should be applied for only 20min every 2 hrs. After 48hr period heat can be applied to help reduce pain associated with muscle injury. Either dry heat such as an electric blanket or moist heat such as a steamed towel can be used
