Traveling Tips: Follow These Helpful Tips if you are Traveling Overseas
If you like to travel then you know just how aggravating it can be sometimes given all the new rules and regulations that seem to pop out of nowhere. Whether it is long lines at the airport, in customs or waiting to board a cruise ship it just seems traveling has become more like work than fun.
I can’t guarantee how the guy in customs will treat you, or how the security person will look you over while you pass through, but here are some tips that you can implement to help your travel plans out. Whereas it might not make all the headaches go away, it should alleviate some of your stress.
State Department
Register with your state department prior to leaving. You can register your entire travel itinerary with them so in the event of an emergency they can act a lot fast on your behalf in case they have to get you home. If you fear that your privacy will be jeopardized, don’t be, you are protected by the privacy act and your information can only be released to those who you have given permission to do so.
Passport
Make sure your passport is up to date and signed. Make sure it is completely filled out with the proper emergency contact information. In the event someone overseas needs to get a hold of your emergency contact, this could make things a lot easier for you.
Travel Plan
Just like in boating where you leave a float plan so your loved ones know where you are going, should leave an itinerary behind so your family and friends know where you are and on what days.
Medical Coverage
A friend of the family of ours suffered a heart attack while in Mexico. He survived but found out quickly his insurance did not cover him out of the country. He had to put the entire bill on credit cards (about $30,000). After it happens is too late to realize you did not have the right coverage. Call you insurance company to see if you are covered out of the country, and if not, find out what you need to do so that you do get covered. There are supplemental plans available for most insurance carriers, and remember you will only need it for the time you are away and the cost could be well worth it.
Emergency Contacts
Know the phone numbers, addresses and other information for the U.S. Embassy in the country where you are going. They are your lifeline in the event something bad happens. They are available twenty four hours per day, seven days per week, to provide emergency assistance to American travelers abroad. Get that information, keep it handy while you travel and make a copy for a loved one at home.
Don’t Be a Target
This could be more common sense than anything else, but it needs t be said since a lot of people still do it. Take the necessary steps so that you are not a target for crime overseas. Wearing flashy jewelry, carrying a lot of cash, visiting areas where you really shouldn’t be are all sure fire ways to get in trouble very quickly. Watch you luggage and bags at all time and never ever accept a package from a stranger.
These tips probably won’t get you through a waiting line any faster, but they can give you and your loved ones peace of mind.
