Trying to Make Sense of Campervan Insurance Policies

When one considers just how much a campervan costs, it only seems logical to make sure it's adequately insured. Unfortunately, most companies view campervans in a very different light to ordinary cars and vans and as a result, finding the ideal sort of cover can sometimes prove to be quite a challenge.

One of the main differences between a campervan and a car, in terms of insurance, is that campervans are usually loaded with expensive commodities and of course, as the owner, you will want to know the contents are also fully covered. Some people do not actually stop to think about how much they spend on kitting their vehicle out. The truth is, it's not only things like a DVD player, an audio system, a cooker, a refrigerator and etc. which cost money, but instead, all those other small items also add up. How much would it cost you to replace knives, forks, spoons, linen, camping equipment and the likes? These are all things which need to be taken into account when you shop around for insurance. In other words, you need to make sure the level of cover you opt for will be enough to enable you to replace everything, should your van ever get stolen or broken into.

Not all policies will automatically include contents insurance, so this is quite understandably something you need to be watchful for. Also, you need to study the fine print carefully, given that many insurance providers will only cover a certain percentage of the costs when it has to do with the contents of your vehicle.

Another common obstacle has to do with the owner's age and in fact, if you are under the age of 21, you may well find that some insurance companies will simply turn you away. Some providers even require you to be at least 25 years of age in order to qualify for campervan insurance and if they do not turn you away, they will almost certainly hike up the price in order to compensate for the increase in risk. Yes, as a young motorist, you are considered to be "high risk" material, so if one company does not want to have anything to do with you, you either have to park your van up, or you have to continue your search. As unfair as what this may seem, there really is nothing you can do about it.

If you have not yet purchased your new home away from home, you'd also be well advised to steer well clear of imports, or at least, think about it very carefully. Vehicle specifications play a large role in being able to obtain affordable insurance in the UK and many imported vehicles simply do not meet the requirements. Yes, it can be tempting to buy an imported vehicle, particularly if it's being offered at a really good price, but what you save on the purchase price, you will almost certainly loose elsewhere. For example, the vehicle may need to undergo a number of modifications and that alone could end up costing you a few thousand pounds. Then, when all the requirements have been met, you will be trying to find insurance for a modified vehicle and yes you have guessed it, that is going to cost you more yet again.

Lastly but not least, you need to do whatever it takes in order to make your van difficult to steal. Insurance companies lose millions and millions of pounds in the UK every year because of theft, so the more difficult you make it for thieves, the more chance you have of finding a good deal on campervan insurance.
