Home Security: Five Tips that are low cost and low tech that You can Implement Today

We all want our families to be safe. However the thought of paying thousands to get a home security system installed and the monthly fee to go along with it is quite scary and of course way out of the budget. Here are some low tech, low cost ways to make your home more secure without breaking the bank.

Get a Dog
Ok this is the obvious one and if you are an animal lover like me, nothing brings a sense of protection to the home more than dog. When trained properly they provide loyalty, friendship and undying support and love to the family that takes care of them. They let you know when someone walks by the house with their bark and if they are a breed of dog they people associate with being “strong” that alone will deter even the most ambitious burglar.

Motion Lights
Change your outside lights to motion sensor lights or add an additional high wattage spot light with motion sensor near areas of the house where someone could enter. A suspecting burglar could see the darkness of your home and then when that spotlight shines upon them, they standout like a deer in headlights. You can pick one up from any home center for under $75. Just remember to use a CFL as the bulb.

Obstacles
Do you have basement windows that look inviting to a burglar? One of the best methods is barriers to prevent them from being used by outside intruders. Using thorny bushes around your basement windows creates a natural fence with protection. Most burglars are looking for an easy in and easy out, they last thing they want is to pick needles and thorns out of there hands face and “other areas”.

Technology
Ok so you don’t want to spend thousands on a home security system, but did you know you can buy a security camera for under $25 and watch your entrance ways from work or on vacation through the power of the internet? They are easy to set up, and while I would not consider these cameras high tech and definitely not high def, they will give you some additional firepower in your arsenal.

Common Sense
Some of the simplest things you can do are some basic common sense approaches. Never leave a key outside (under the mat) that someone can use to gain access to your home. Post beware of dog signs on your property even if you don’t own one. Most burglars won’t take the chance. And of course, lock your doors and windows. If it is in the budget, upgrade the locks on your doors. There really are differences and the better ones will cost some money, but then again, how much is peace of mind worth to you?

As you can see none of these methods will break the bank, but in combination with one another they will decrease your chances of being a victim to a burglar. Don’t take any chances with the safety of your family. Start implementing a security strategy today.
