Tron Legacy: The Long Awaited Sequel To 1982's Tron

It has been close to 30 years since the original film Tron was released in 1982, but that has not stopped film makers from finally creating a sequel to the science fiction blockbuster: Tron Legacy. There were many unfounded rumors going around about a Tron sequel during the 90's. Fans of the first film were disappointed to find that no sequel was ever made. But fans were excited to hear the surprise news that Disney was serious about producing a sequel at the 2008 San Francisco Comic-Con.

Kevin Flynn was the main character in the original Tron film, and Tron Legacy follows the story of his son, Sam Flynn. While Sam looks into the disappearance of his father and attempts to locate him, he is accidentally pulled into the virtual world where his father has been stuck for all these years and the two must fight to escape.

Although it is difficult to say exactly when Disney started work on the Tron Legacy project, some of the earliest news about the film were released in January 2005 when Lee Sternthal and Brian Klugman were hired to write an untitled sequel to Tron. Concerned fans were relieved to see that Disney had not stopped work on Tron Legacy when they saw a trailer at the 2008 Comic-Con. Tron Legacy was officially given that name by the Disney panel at the 2009 Comic-Con. The name comes from the theme of the film, which focuses on a son's search for his father.

The first Tron film was beloved for many reasons, perhaps most of all the Light Cycles featured in the movie; they are back and have been redesigned for Tron Legacy. A two seat Light Runner was also created by Daniel Simon and his design team. Disney even made life size Light Cycles as part of its marketing efforts and showed them off at the Fan Expo in Toronto in 2009.

The first filming session was in Vancouver, British Columbia in April 2009. All of the stage scenes for the movie were done at the Canadian Motion Picture Park. One of the most exciting features of the film is that all shooting was done entirely in 3D, and even the teaser to the film was presented in 3D. Daft Punk was assigned to create a soundtrack and did so using 24 different songs. Tron Legacy is scheduled to be shown on December 17, 2010 in the US and Canada.
